Andrew Malcolm
Andrew Malcolm had an early start in choral music, thanks to parents who sang (and continue to sing!) in a number of choirs and groups around the city. He is the product of Edmonton's thriving choral community, having sung with many ensembles including Edmonton Children's Choir, Kokopelli, the TIME Association, and Chronos Vocal Ensemble. He has also sung in several small vocal ensembles including 6 Minute Warning, of which he was a founding member. Andrew recently switched careers from mechanical engineering to teaching, and is a dad to a daughter.
What is your major musical influence?
Graeme thought his response to this question was cheesy, but I'm about to one-up him: I think it has to be my parents! And especially my dad, Peter, who has sung in Pro Coro for over 20 years and guided much of my own musical journey. But as far as artists go, The Real Group and Take 6 have to be two of my biggest influences in the a cappella group realm. Voces8 I have also found hugely inspiring from a classical perspective, and my favourite individual vocalist is Kurt Elling!
What are your favorite Pro Coro Canada performances?
I have been part of so many great Pro Coro performances over the years (singing The Nightingale in Banff comes to mind), but some of my favourite moments have come during male choir performances. I mean, the music was always great, but I will always remember the ridiculous practical joke of shaving off our mustaches at intermission. Did anyone ever notice that several of us would come back clean shaven for the second half??
Which performance should people come and hear, and why?
I've always been excited by the educational and mentorship opportunities Pro Coro provides for young musicians through the Emerging Artist Program, particularly the #connect Choir. I think it is such a cool thing to offer young singers a chance to experience how a professional choir operates and learn how that feels for them. We have so much young talent in this city!
